As Mink and Aoba venture higher up into Oval Tower, Aoba spots specks of light fluttering on Ren's face, but Ren coldly brushes him off. When Mink and Aoba are separated while escaping the guards, Aoba encounters a holographic Sei, who is pleased to finally meet Aoba. Sei explains to the bewildered Aoba that he was one the who sent demos of "Silent Oath" and the invitation to Platinum Jail, guiding him to Oval Tower so Aoba could "break" him with his power. As Sei is at his limit, he encourages Aoba to hurry and come to him before his hologram disappears. Aoba is then captured by Morphine, and learns that Virus and Trip are the leaders of the group. They reveal that they were they ones that erased Aoba's memories of his time playing Rhyme in order to keep him hidden from Toue, as they wanted Aoba to themselves. Additionally, they tell Aoba that Sei is his older twin brother, and both were designer babies created by Toue using Tae's research.

La historia nos traslada a Midorijima, una próspera isla en el suroeste del archipiélago japonés donde la humanidad y la naturaleza una vez coexistieron. Sin embargo, tras pasar a manos de la Compañía Toue, una poderosa corporación japonesa, una tercera parte de la isla se ha convertido en “Platinum Jail”, unas extravagantes instalaciones de ocio. Equipada con la última tecnología, la popularidad de Platinum Jail ha ascendido muy rápido. Por otro lado, los isleños que se han visto convertidos en víctimas de este forzado desarrollo, se ven obligados a vivir en el “Distrito para antiguos residentes”, un lugar que es de todo menos próspero. El protagonista, Aoba Seragaki, pasa sus días trabajando en una tienda de chatarra llamada “Heibon” dentro del distrito, viviendo con su abuela Tae. Entre los jóvenes del Distrito se ha hecho popular un juego: el “Ribstiez”. En él, se crean equipos y se luchan por territorios. Por otro lado está el “Rhyme”, un juego online con un mundo virtual inmersivo. Aoba no tiene interés en ninguno de los dos juegos y solo quiere vivir tranquilo con su abuela, pero un desastre sacudirá los cimientos de su situación.
